Pekanbaru (Catra Media) — The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has expressed its support for the government’s move to remove recipients of social assistance (bansos) who are involved in online gambling. MUI emphasized that gambling goes against both the law and religious values.

“In Islamic law, gambling is strictly forbidden (haram), as clearly stated in the Qur’an, Surah Al-Maidah, verse 90,” said MUI Advisory Council Deputy Chairman Zainut Tauhid Sa’adi in Jakarta on Saturday (July 12).

Data from the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) revealed that 571,410 social aid recipients were identified as online gambling players, out of a total of 28.4 million recipients.

Zainut described gambling as a social disease that fuels hostility, addiction, poverty, and family breakdown. He also called on law enforcement to take firm action against all parties involved in gambling practices, including gambling bosses, couriers, site operators, and syndicate members.

“MUI supports the government and law enforcement’s efforts to rid Indonesia of all forms of gambling,” he affirmed. (*)
