Pekanbaru (Catra Media) — Two students from Gadjah Mada University (UGM) were killed in a tragic marine accident in the waters off Debut, Southeast Maluku Regency, Maluku, on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.
The victims have been identified as Septian Eka Rahmadi and Bagus Adi Prayogo, both 21 years old. They were participating in a Community Empowerment-Based Student Community Service Program (KKN-PPM) in Southeast Maluku.
Septian Eka Rahmadi was a student of the Information Technology Program at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Faculty of Engineering, UGM. He was known for his intelligence, humility, and strong dedication to learning and community service.
Bagus Adi Prayogo was an undergraduate student from UGM’s Faculty of Forestry. Hailing from Magelang, Bagus was described as active, intelligent, humble, and deeply concerned about the environment.
“We have lost two promising young individuals filled with potential and spirit. May they rest in peace, and may their families be granted strength during this difficult time,” said Dr. Rustamadji, Director of Community Service at UGM, as quoted from the university’s official website on Tuesday.
Following the incident, Bagus was initially reported missing before his body was discovered late Tuesday night at 11:00 p.m. local time near Wahr Island. The head of Ambon’s Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), Muhammad Arafah, confirmed that the search operation was officially called off after his body was found.
“We extend our gratitude to all parties involved in the search and evacuation efforts,” Arafah told state news agency Antara on Wednesday, July 2.
Septian and Bagus were members of the KKN-PPM unit stationed in Manyeuw, Southeast Maluku. At the time of the accident, they were working on a coral reef revitalization project using the Artificial Patch Reef (APR) method.
