Pekanbaru (Catra Media) — Foreign language proficiency, particularly in English, is increasingly regarded as a key requirement for entering the professional workforce. Responding to this growing demand, the Faculty of Letters at Universitas Persada Bunda Indonesia (UPBI), located at Jalan Diponegoro 42, Pekanbaru, Riau, is offering prospective students the opportunity to pursue advanced language studies through its Bachelor of English Literature program.
“Nearly all industry sectors seek candidates with strong language skills, especially in English. Our Faculty of Letters has demonstrated its relevance in the job market through the high percentage of graduates employed across various industries, both domestically and abroad,” said Dr. Lelly Zuyana, S.S., M.Pd., Dean of the UPBI Faculty of Letters, in an interview with reporters recently.
Dr. Lelly further noted that UPBI graduates have not only thrived in the private sector, but many have also succeeded as civil servants (ASN). Alumni now hold strategic positions in government institutions such as the Ministry of Tourism, the Mayor’s Office of Pekanbaru, and as educators in public schools.
A number of graduates have also built careers overseas, working as data analysts in Malaysia or as crew members on international cruise lines operating in American waters. This, she said, highlights how language proficiency can unlock global opportunities.
“Our curriculum is designed in alignment with current industry needs. We develop literary studies with a practical and interdisciplinary approach to ensure its relevance across various fields,” she added.
Echoing this vision, Diana Zuriati, S.S., M.Pd., Head of the English Literature Program, explained that the curriculum is continuously refined to align with labor market trends. Notably, the program has integrated cutting-edge content, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), into its coursework.
“Our goal is to ensure students are equipped with the skills and adaptability needed to thrive in a tech-driven world, without compromising their academic identity as English literature graduates,” Diana said.
She also refuted outdated perceptions that English literature graduates are confined to careers as writers or poets. “In today’s era of openness and global mobility, language proficiency is a critical asset for cross-border employment. Our alumni are living proof of that,” she stated.
Enrollment for the UPBI Faculty of Letters is open until August 31, 2025. Prospective students have the opportunity to receive tuition discounts ranging from 10 to 20 percent, covering both development and academic fees.
“These tuition incentives reflect our commitment to supporting young people in taking bold steps forward through education,” Diana concluded.
